Hi everyone. My name is Steven. I'm one of the general surgery residents at University of Michigan hospitals. I'll be talking about why I decided to choose Michigan as my training program for the next seven years. I think one of the top reasons is the feel that I got during my interview day and this was a little bit tough because we were fully virtual. So all of the interviews were conducted through zoom. But I had my partner join with me during one of our resident dinners and he was able to also assess the people here, the culture. and it really, really seemed like all the residents here knew each other very well and were very fond of each other and cared deeply for each other and that they had really good relationships with their attendings as well. And the fact that I was able to pick up on that through this virtual environment was a good sign for me. And two, you know, I talked to a lot of the residents here about the culture of the program and what the program was looking for. And one of the things that I wanted to focus on was opportunity for me to do some diversity equity, but also like education research at the University of Michigan and I was happy to find out that there is a two year research time in the middle of the residency after our 3rd year where I could focus on research whether that is in a clinical setting, but also in surgical education and mentorship and also diversity within surgery. So that was also another reason why I was very fond of the University of Michigan program. And I think the last reason is that it is a powerhouse. And University of Michigan has a lot of complex cases, a lot of people who are seeking care of higher level who come to the University of Michigan for that high level care. And I think with the University of Michigan being that kind of center, I would be able to see a lot of cases that I might not be able to see at smaller centers or community hospitals.
