My name is luke brawler and I'm a first year freshman communications major here at S. Are you today? I will be talking about one resource that? S are you students have access to? As soon as their applications are accepted. Towards the end of my senior year of high school I was struggling to decide on a career path, let alone a college major. That's why I connected with DR randy, assistant vice president of the career center here at S. Are you if that name doesn't ring a bell for you? You may have heard him referred to as the bold career guy. Over the course of a few months I met with DR randy of resume once a week and underwent a series of steps in order to find the career titles that best suited my interests a process. Dr Randy learned more about what I was into and help me to explore what I could be into. Now I'm going to tell you about some of the things we did together to start we built my resume from the ground up. Then we made my linkedin profile and use linkedin as a reef source to find experienced professionals in my areas of interest and after that I set up informational interviews with them in order to learn more about their jobs. S are you related as well as creating these campus real videos, like the one you're watching right now. Lastly we explored student run clubs and organizations that I might like, such as Rock Prs essay which I'm now an active member of all of this provided me with a more solid understanding of my career desires and ultimately led me to feel more comfortable in choosing a major, whether you're feeling a little lost on your career path or simply need help building a resume. The career center is a great resource and there are several career coach is available to U. S. Are you Now? Let's talk to dr randy, So dr randy. I was just telling the audience about the great experience I had with you over zoom last spring and how helpful it was for me. Can you give a brief overview of how career coaching meetings with students work? Sure. There's a lot of different opportunities to come and work with a career coach, it could be to build a first year resume. Remember that your your career coaches have worked on thousands and thousands of resumes. So even if it's something that seems simple like a resume that ultimately is the document that's going to tell employers a lot about you. In terms of major and career exploration, you once you made an appointment and you come and sit with your career coach And we're going to ask you probably questions that you didn't suspect rather than what are you going to be? Which is the common question people get asked throughout middle school and high school. If you think about it, with there being over 30,000 career paths, asking someone who's 17 or 18 years old, what are you going to be? Is really kind of a foolish question, since you are really only aware of a small percentage, maybe 50 or 60 careers. So the better question is, who are you? We're going to talk about what makes you joyful, what makes you feel engaged? What gives you energy? Because ultimately wouldn't it be better to say what out there looks like that in terms of joy engagement, putting you in a state of flow and letting you go out and experiment and see if in fact you would love doing those things as opposed to randomly choosing something a career that you've heard of and say, I'm going to be this. Then junior senior year decide, wow, I don't want to do this at all. How will the career center prepare any student who comes its way for the professional world? Well, first by talking to the professional world, I mean on a college campus, no one talks to more employers than your career professionals. So don't you want to get advice from somebody who is constantly interacting with the world of work. Now at slippery rock, we work with a couple of 1002 to 3000 employers every year at any given time, we have almost 10,000 full time jobs on our handshake jobs board at any given time. We have around 2000 internships on our handshake jobs board. In addition to all the on campus jobs, and we're talking to those employers and we're asking them, what knowledge do students need to have, what skills, what abilities, what experiences do we need to eventually get on those resumes so that you're impressed and excited about that. So if we engage students early as first year students, we now have an opportunity to share those things so that you as a student, engage in those things over four years. So you have this wonderful story that you can tell both on your resume, but also in a job interview. So that's why that extended career development, this isn't a one and done relationship and what kinds of positive outcomes can come from career coaching. Well, you know, it depends on how students decide, this is what success is to me, you know, we use this generic term student success as if it's one thing, it's not, you know luke for you. It's one thing for this person, it's another thing, it could be, I want to make a lot of money, it could be, I want to lead something. It could be, listen, I just want to have a great family and make enough to pay my bills and go on one trip a year. What is success to you? Is it finding a job before you leave college? Is is it finding a job within six months of graduating? Is it leaving with as little debt as possible? In which case let's talk about non credit internships that are paid, let's talk about credit bearing internships that are paid. Do keep in mind that slippery rock traditionally has the highest full time employment rate of most of our state institutions and that happens not because of just what the career coaches do, but the actions then the bias to actions that students take the next steps. Last question, how can students schedule a time with a career coach? I always say there are three core ways to schedule an appointment with the office of career education and Development. Number one, go to bailey library, go in the front door off the quad, go straight back and you'll see the sign to tell you go right and around the corner, walk up to the desk and say, I'm not sure what I'm doing with my life. I really need to build a resume with somebody who has built 10,000 resumes. I really want to practice my interview skills, write a personal statement for grad school, do a life design, take your focus assessment, anything engaged, the career office early and often number to call them up 724738 20 to 8 74 738 to 0 to eight and just let them know what type of appointment you would like it.
