Home of Exercise Science | Tour Patterson Hall with Alyssa
The following is an computer-generated summary of the video transcript.
My name is Alyssa, and I am an exercise science student here at Slippery Rock University on a pre professional track of physical therapy. Today, I'm going to tell you a little bit about my experience as an exercise science major. I'm also going to show you Paterson Hall, which is where exercise science is located. So without further ado, please follow me and I'm gonna show you Paterson Hall. I'm in the lobby of Paterson, which I told you is the home of exercise science. So before I show you some classrooms, I just want to tell you what you can do with exercise science degree. Cardiac and pulmonary rehab is a really big one, as well as strength and conditioning training. Springboard for other programs like physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant, and you can even pursue a master's in exercise physiology. So right now I'm going to talk to you a little bit about this space here, which is the Technogym. So the Technogym here in Paterson has some of the best equipment on campus, and it's for us exercise science students to use. So one of my favorite things that I did in this space was my exercise physiology class. We actually got to use the treadmills over here and practice. Taking blood pressure is taking heart rates on the piers in my class, so being able to actually like do hands on stuff and costs a big thing in exercise science. Another course is resistance training, where all of this equipment resistance training equipment you can actually use for that class and practice making programs, which all comes very handy, and your senior synthesis class, which you take other junior senior year. For that class, you actually get paired with a client in the community or someone on campus, and you basically become their personal trainer and you can help them meet their goals throughout the semester. So it's really awesome that you as a student, can actually use this equipment. You can actually use it practice, get their hands on experience that you need to be the best student possible. We have tons of different equipment in the back here and lots of open space that you can use for your classes and that hands on experience that you get as an exercise science student. So one of my favorite classes I had in here was my aerobic exercise leadership. For that class, you get to learn how to communicate. You have really good communication skills, which again is really important in the healthcare field and exercise science and anything you want to do after that. This is a really great space, and I feel really lucky as an exercise science suited to be able to utilize it. So this is another classroom here in Paterson, and some of my favorite courses in this space includes fitness assessment. You get to use again this equipment, and you're practicing different assessments on your peers that you would actually use in more of a clinical setting to assess your patients. Here we have lots of treadmills, bikes, just great equipment that you can use as a student again promoting that hands on experience that we love to talk about, and if you will come over here with me we actually have behind this white board a huge research treadmill because our department loves to be involved in research. You, as a student, can get involved in that too. Student faculty research is a really big pro to being in this program, and I've actually been involved in that as well. So this is our gigantic research check bill that can go up to 40% grade. So being able to have this equipment really opens up opportunities for our department and you as a student. Here we have Dr Home Strap High Lissa, your perspective student. I think that you would love the Exercise science program here at Silver Rock University, teaching our exercise physiology course as well as a course called Exercise Leadership Resistance Training. If you had to ask me what I really love about slippery rock, it's the freedom as a professor to, um, take chances in the classroom to engage students with critical thinking. We've got really great hands on facilities to do that. The nice thing about working at Slippery Rock in the Exercise science program is that I get to allow undergraduates to take part to help with all of those different research projects. So if you're interested in coming to a program where you're gonna be challenged and, uh, emerge on the other side as a health care professional, then this is a place for you. I hope you guys enjoyed seeing Paterson Hall and learning a little bit more about exercise science here at Slippery Rock University.
