Remote Learning at Washington State University
The following is an computer-generated summary of the video transcript.
Hi everyone. My name is Hayden Jeremiah, and I am a senior here at Washington State University. I am studying public relations with a minor in business administration. In this video, I am going to share with my remote learning experience has looked like as a WSU student. It's hard to believe that as I'm filming this video, it's been exactly one year since WSU converted to a virtual format. A typical remote class schedule at WSU consists of synchronous and asynchronous classes. Synchronous classes provide live lectures with your instructor at designated times. On the other hand, asynchronous classes are prerecorded lectures that can be accessed at any time. The benefit of asynchronous classes is increased flexibility in your schedule because you do not have to meet with your class at a specific time. However, it is easy to get off track and procrastinate watching prerecorded lectures. Therefore, there is a benefit to maintaining a consistent schedule. For example, if you have a marketing class that requires you to watch to prerecorded lectures a week, you could designate Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9 a.m. to watch those videos. This way you are holding yourself accountable and will avoid falling behind. WSU uses zoom video communications to hold live synchronous lectures. Many of my professors use the breakout room feature so students can interact and collaborate with a small group of peers. Also, if you have questions after the lecture, most professors make themselves available to students by staying on the zoom call after class. In this virtual environment, I have noticed that most of my professors send emails at the start of the week. These emails discuss weekly activities, assignments and exams that set clear expectations and deadlines. I have personally benefited from this emailing system as it has helped me straight organized and informed about my coursework. In my experience, remote learning essentials include access to a quiet workplace, strong and reliable WiFi and commitment to maintaining a schedule. All of these will help you succeed in a virtual environment. Thank you guys so much watching, and I'll hopefully see you in the next video.
