Sarah Talks about Safety at SDSU
The following is an computer-generated summary of the video transcript.
My name is Sarah and I'm a 30 year double major in business management and theater arts here at SAn Diego State University in san Diego California. In this video, I'm going to be talking about the safety of our campus here at S. C. S. U. And then also some resources that are available to students in regards to their safety. So we are fortunate to have our very own university police. University police officers do have statewide police jurisdiction. Of course their primary jurisdiction is of our campus and the surrounding areas because safety is of major importance here on campus. The university Police department proactively patrols our campus and also offers a number of safety training programs as well as self defense programs for students. Members of the community are also encouraged to report suspicious behavior and activity immediately. With that we definitely operate under the motto. If you see something, say something in an emergency, you can contact university police by of course dialing 911 or by using one of the blue emergency. These emergency dressed phones have a little call button that will get you in direct contact with the university police. The university police department is located on 55th street across from the Aztec recreation center and next Peterson Jim on the east side of campus. Safety is always a huge factor when looking at a college campus. So that's why I felt it was really important to make this video because students and parents often want to know how safe the campuses. S. C. S. U. Is located in an urban area. It is an open campus and it definitely functions like a little city and just like being in a city. It is really important to be aware of your surroundings and to just follow general safety tips like going places and groups or you know, using the buddy system and things like that. We do also have a trolley stop and a bus station on our campus, which of course is a great resource, but it does also draw a lot of homeless people to our campus. This is something that I definitely wish I knew before coming to campus. So I think it's really important to note that we do have a high homeless population around our campus regardless. I have still never felt super unsafe on my campus and if I ever really did feel that unsafe, I know that I know who to call like university police or that I could use one of the emergency polls like I mentioned earlier. If there is a crime that all of that information will be communicated through a mass notification system to all students and parents who are signed up by text and email on any college campus. They're going to be things that come up, but you just have to make sure that you know what to do, who to call and what your options are.
