You take a bus to get to class?!
Susie Pinon Campus
The buses at Rutgers University are the main form of transportation for students. Even with a parking pass, students are limited to one campus of their choosing for where they decide to have their parking pass. If you park on a lot that you don’t have a pass for, you will receive a (hefty) citation. They are extremely strict. Parking passes range from 100 ish $ for commuters and 300 ish$ For the year to keep your car on campus. This prices vary from campus to campus (depending on popularity- like CA is the most expensive). Buses get extremely packed during rush hour, and you will often be uncomfortably close to multiple strangers at a time. It is often likely that you will not get on a bus if you are not forward and make your way to the front of the door. There was a time that I could not get on 3 lx’s in a row because they were so filled. That no longer happens because I know what time to head for the buses, and even how to make sure I get a seat (sometimes pushing is involved). That is just the culture of the Rutgers buses. If you absolutely cannot take a bus, you’re only other solid alternative is riding your bike from campus to campus. There are designated bike lanes everywhere, as well as a bike rack on every campus bus, in case you need a break from riding. If you live in off-campus housing, you may have a driveway to keep your car, but that does not mean you will escape using the buses. Also, there is an application for free for all phone types that include the Rutgers bus schedule. It includes the routes of every bus, as well as the ETA of when every bus will arrive to every stop. There are signs at many bus stops which also indicate wait times. Sometimes these don’t work. Sometimes the app is inaccurate. Multiple computer labs display wait times for buses, and so does the huge TV at The Yard. Good luck! You will get used to it, and it will become second nature in no time.
