Hi everyone. My name is Nevaeh Lockwood and I'm a freshman at North Country Community College in the practical nursing program. I'm a first year student, so I just completed my first ever semester of college, and I'm heading into my second semester at the beginning of February. Just to give you a little bit of background about me, I live in Ogdensburg, New York, which I believe is as far north as you can get in New York, because I can see Canada from my bedroom window and I could see the cars driving by and the train over in Canada, I can hear the whistle, which is pretty cool. I graduated in 2020 from Ogdensburg Free Academy in my hometown. And just to give you an idea of where Ogdensburg is, I'm about two hours from campus. And now to get into some info about North Country Community College. North Country is located in Saranac Lake, and the campus is located directly in the town with a total enrollment of 1978 students. And just to give you an idea, the student to faculty ratio is 13 to 1. I learned about North Country. my senior year of high school where I attended Northwest Tech BOCES, which is a vocational school where I was earning college credits through North Countryin high school. I visited campus the end of 2019 in the fall, and this is before Covid. I loved How North Country was surrounded by nature, and it's so close to things like grocery stores and gas stations, if you ever were to need them. And it is also close to my personal favorite, Lake Placid. I was looking for a small school with friendly people, and when I visited campus I noticed how everyone knew each other's names. And I personally love that. I was looking for a college away from home, so I loved the location of North Country, and I also really like the dorm rooms, even though I haven't been given the opportunity to live in them yet. I thought they were really nice. I chose North Country because I wanted a school where I can earn my LPN degree in one year and potentially earn my RN degree in two. Another reason I chose a two year school so I could give my future self the opportunity to choose if I wanted to complete my BSN degree online or in an in person school. I love North country so far, and even though being an online student, my first year of college has had its struggles, my teachers and administrators worked really hard to make sure my first semester ran very smoothly for me. And even while being online, I still managed to meet many great people, especially in my program. So even though you can't meet these new people face to face, you could still talk to them virtually and make friends online. North Country also has lots of great resources available while you are working as a student online. So there are opportunities for you to get tutoring, which is great if you're struggling in a course, and you can also play games like trivia and bingo, where you can actually earn prizes that North Country sends to your house, which is really cool. So far I love everything about North Country, and I can't wait to see where it takes myself and my classmates in the future.
