Environmental Science and Wilderness Studies really boils down to three degree programs at North country, which all focus on being outdoors. Is there a better place to focus on being outdoors rather than the Adirondack Park? First, we have environmental science. Students in this degree learn about the environments natural processes as well as the interactions between plants, animals and other organisms. Students are immersed into the rich ecosystem of the Adirondacks and regularly conduct their fieldwork and many locations within the park. Students within this degree program take a deep dive into the broader environmental issues facing the United States and the rest of the world. These students examine the environmental policies, economic development, land management practices and responses to climate change. The students studying these topics within the Adirondack Park, where the natural environment has been affected greatly last. We have wilderness, recreational leadership, and students studying this degree have the opportunity to make the Adirondack wilderness their classroom. Using the forests, lakes and mountains, students are able to develop their skills into hiking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, skiing and snowshoeing. Students also dive into research projects that affect the conservation, management and sustainability of the New York's wild spaces. Students leaving this program are well prepared to become guides outdoor educators in other recreational pros.
