Hi, My name is Elie Milosevski, and I'm a rheumatologist at MGH. I'm also one of the core subspecialty educators, and I wanted to talk to you today about how we approach subspecialty education at MGH. I think we do this in a really unique way. First of all, every subspecialty division, cardiology, pulmonary, because etcetera has a court educator who is a specialist who is in charge of bringing that's specialty to to the residency program. First of all, we really try to bring specialists to the General Medicine Service, and I think one of the unique things we have on our Bigelow services that most Bigelow teams have a to attending model. Usually it's, Ah, hospitalists, perhaps a court educator paired with someone else and that someone else is often a sub specialist. Eso That's one of the ways that we bring, um, specialties to the general medicine services. Another way we do it is through the consulate services. So there is a has been a big effort underway at MGH over the last five or six years to really focus on fellows as educators as well a subspecialty attending a Z educators. As a result, there is a great chemistry and camaraderie between fellows and residents, and MGH and the fellows, um, have a priority in teaching. They have training in their teaching skills, and as a result, you learn a tremendous amount from consulate services when you're on the general medicine services. Uh, the course subspecialty educators air also in charge of running the rotations within that that specialty on. I think all of the subspecialties do a great job off of having a wonderful rotations for the residents. So I'll just give you an example from my specialty, which is rheumatology. It's a combined inpatient and outpatient rotation, and in the outpatient portion of it, um, there are patients that are scheduled specifically for the residents. So in a typical clinic session, the residents would see two new patients precept ID by one of our great faculty members. That's how you know we really try to take away shadowing and try toe have residents primarily seeing patients taking ownership, and we've gotten feedback that that it's really a wonderful learning experience and then the third way that we focus on subspecialty education is by organizing the subspecialty curriculum. So each subspecialty core educator works very closely with the overall curricular team within the residency program, um, to make sure that the important parts of the of the specialty are covered in a career in the curriculum. I, all of the sessions are case based and interactive. That's because I think we all recognize that many of you have a lot of the subspecialty knowledge. Um, it's not just about having the knowledge, but really about learning to apply it and gaining confidence and applying it. We really try to do that in every aspect of your education, from the General Medicine Service to the subspecialty rotations to the residency curriculum.
