My name is Harrison Shock, and I'm Nicholas to shop, and we are both graduating seniors in the class of 2020 and I'm a political science and German double major with a vocal performance Minor from Grand Rapids, Michigan, and I'm also a German political science civil major with vocal performance Minor, also from Grand Rapids, Michigan. So we're here today to talk a little bit about the fine arts and how we kind of, um, came into it. So I guess we'll give a little bit of background on ourselves first. So when my brother and I were very young, were involved in the Children's after workshop in Grand Rapids and then opera Grand Rapids and finally spending many years in the Grand Rapids Symphony Youth course branch of the Grand Rapids Symphony of Classical Music as well as coral grew very strongly was a large part of our high school middle school and elementary school experience. It's not leave that important part of ourselves, and our passion behind Dennison has a great way of letting students explore their passions during their four years on the hill. The tickle venison Student day begins at 8 30 may end at latest at 4 30. Then that's when finance and performance classes could begin. What this allows students to do is have a normal four class load and then also take extra classes for performance ensembles and rehearsal groups from dance, two singers, theater to chamber choirs. Yes, a number of different things gonna become involved. In a way, we've we've been with him the four years it's been wonderful, and we start out with half hour lessons and as well as soon as we decided to declare a global performance minor, those lessons got upgraded to an hour long, and with scholarship they were free and extra. Yes, there's a huge, supportive alumni base that funds the scholarship that really encourages students, so be able to pursue their passions with music. You know, opportunities outside of the department to do music. Um, there are small ensemble clubs for, like, chamber instrumental music. The Ellen Oh all women group Ladies Night Out Tequila, which is a gospel based a cappella group and then do up, which is a coed acapella group as well. Their concerts all through the year for students, many different student hangouts, and they play a big part of the culture on campus. Yeah, it's the fine arts at Denison really is well into wrote woven into the community and campus life at Dennis. Many friends come to support their students, actors and performers and during their performances. I mean, it's a really it's it's really great. You can be, you know, manager for the choir, work in the library files for the music as well. Performance outside of performing all those different aspects that theater production that we don't usually think about is performers are right. Identities is you know, we're so close to Columbus, we get access to something, you know, like the Columbus Symphony at the Ohio Thier. Often Dennison has envelopes full of tickets just for students that we have definitely taken advantage of dozens of times. While we're here through our study of music history, it's been especially helpful when one of the composer's being played it by the Ohio Symphony, the Columbus Symphony. We have really enjoyed our time in the music department and as well as the finance community and with the new Eisner Center. There are so many possibilities that open up to the performing arts community. There used to be three separate buildings that would how is the dance, music and visual arts as well as theater building Now that now theater, dance and music are all under one building, with Bryant Center still having fine arts and art history? Yes, and what the need thing was is that each individual hall was on the smaller side, but it's still cozy. We made it work, but now with this new center, it's fantastic that we have such large rehearsal space, large performance halls, dressing rooms together, our costumes and a whole costume shop where people as a student job can work, help make costumes helped put on a performance right along with the performers. We're so thankful to get to use the new space and hope that Dennis own Ian's of the future get to use it as well. It's something that's really cool, and it's gonna become a a focal point of the campus. Just in the hill, outside of fine arts for Brief Bone, we'll talk about visual arts. Yes, I mean, that is in the Bryant Hall of Arts, and it's really, really wonderful. It's tucked right into the hill and has all your visual arts, from photography, the woodworking to painting as well. So a lot of art students, of course, spent a bit of time in there. I mean all the instrumental groups from Chamber Singers, which is small group audition group concert choir with a large group that meets, or the many string and wind ensembles, or band on samples that provide a larger range of instruments. Yes, and when you look on the dennison dot com page, you can go to departments and see department chairs as well a staff and faculty. So one of the need things that you learn through many of your music professors is that aside from teaching a course there also very involved in their own personal music journey or performance, which adds another level of the relationship that you could make with your professor. Yes, the small classroom sizes encouraged, you know, holistic learning process. You know, we're really thankful to have been a part of it. So we hope that you are looking to destined for the fine Arts is a really strong program. Is alums and certainly watching a lot of your performances.
