The following is an computer-generated summary of the video transcript.
We wanted to take just a little bit of time to talk about studying abroad. Yes, so both of us are German and political science, double majors with vocal performance miners and a lot of students at Denison. A lot of you know, prospective students have questions about how do I study abroad at Denison. I'll take the question of where does it usually fit in medecine students calendar, and most often it happens during their 30 year on campus, either their junior fall or spring and often study abroad can also take place in summer terms as wealthy summer opportunities, while shorter than a full semester, can earn a student credit for their degree. That's true, and there are also if you can't study abroad if your schedule doesn't fit. There are also Dennis and Seminars, which takes students in a number of different departments across the campus abroad after the end of the first or second semester. Sometimes they have during spring break our Thanksgiving break during the fall semester these week or week and a half excursions air led by professors and take students all throughout the world. Europe, South Africa, some have been planned on gets a wonderful opportunity for students who can take that fall semester to go abroad and have that abroad experience with a group of students and professors. How did we fit it all in? How did we make it work? So for us, for to share our experience of it, we'll tell what our program was. So our program was I s Freiburg, the European Union, and we studied in Freiburg in the southwest corner of Germany. We say that the fiber university, with a group of professors and students very interested in international politics, specifically the European Union. Yes, So it worked out really well for us because that only could we help our German language skills. We could also study political science, and we were able to earn credits in both both department, both majors. So you might also be wondering, you know, how did they tailor fit that? Well within Burton Morgan, there's the off campus study office, and they can help you as a student. Rather, they try and tailor fit the experience in the program to your needs. Um, toe have a really well tailored program that meets your needs and interests. One of the interesting things that you could do as a student to help prepare yourself during your sophomore or junior year to prepare for studying abroad is that you meet with your advisors, your academic advisors, and also visit that off campus study offices. Well, what they'll do is help you choose programs that fit your personal interests along with the things that you're studying at. One of our classmates, Hope, was awarded a Fulbright grant to go study just that medicine in France. So these times abroad can also lead to internships, as it did for many of our classmates on the I s Freiburg program, allowing also with our classmate Jeff Alder, who studied in Bulgaria studying corruption for the government So you can do some amazing things. Spring boarding off of your abroad experiences well. You know, taking that experience into the workforce on your resume is super valuable, and the Norton Center can help you apply that that as well. We are alternates as well, and we're awaiting that exciting news in July of where we'll get we can send ourselves back abroad. So it really creates kind of like a lifelong interest in the language is when you go abroad and it's looking back on our four years. It was one of the most formative experiences of learning that we did while we were abroad while we were abroad, we were able to travel through 11 different countries in 28 cities. Nine of those countries and about 15 of those cities were with professors studying the politics of the European Union and what makes the global system of political science work. What makes it function? Meeting with politicians, going into embassies, hearing the opinions right from the policy makers themselves, that firsthand experience is invaluable and creates a lasting impression for Denison's. You know, with political science in German, any of your studies often, you know, seeing it experiences experiencing and outside the classroom is super valuable immersion. Learning for languages is one of the most valuable to the student has to brace themselves and Lang valuable. Yes, so I guess a small, brief overview of what that looks like is, before you go abroad, there's a first kind of a checklist. You get approved by your advisers to make sure that this program perhaps is right for you and following your acceptance hopefully into the program, which you desire. Now it's most advantageous to get all those classes approved either towards your major or a G credit before you take off. Yes, and so all these things and more can lead to a really wonderful junior experience, I know with the coronavirus in the pandemic, breaking um off campus study may look different in the future, but as of now, off campus study, department and office is really well equipped to handle any sorts of needs, and you are super well taken care of while you're abroad is while there are multiple Dennis and Resource is like, um, my Dennison What? One of those things called that day. So my brother brings up a very complicated portion because 11 is abroad. Whether whichever continent you may find yourself on in the future, Internet is always, and security for the Internet is always a question a issue, perhaps for many people. There's a lot to learn, but it's such a valuable experience. Also you can apply for more off campus study scholarships as well, so you can take yourself a broader Dennis in a number of different ways. Besides the O. C s, you could apply to do through the through the list of center scholarly research, um, and Thio to go anywhere you'd like Thio overseas researching in many different programs doesn't necessarily have to be through the office. The majority of students find themselves going through the channel. Being a student in Europe allows you to get into many of the greatest and find this concert halls in this part for free, and as a student, you get to learn and experience where the composer's grew up and then listen and hear a lot of great music and experience a lot of great art while you're abroad as a student, particularly in Europe and also around the world, student passes to concerts, art exhibits and some of the best music one could ever here are on a very discounted price. It's for some amazing memories for both Harris and I. And I know for many of our fellow students have studied abroad. Absolutely. It's a great adventure, and it's worth taking a look at. We hope Thio, we hope that the hill is doing well.
