A few reasons why I chose Denison!

I'm a public health major and a French miner, and I'm here today to tell you guys a little bit about my college search process and why I ended up choosing Dennison on three years ago. When we're talking about college processes, everybody's is different. Its very subjective eso for me, for example, I was looking at schools all over the country that were very, very different from one another. Um, I was looking at schools that were small, like Dennison, as well as medium schools and large schools. I was also looking at specific public health undergraduate programs and places like Dennison, which at the time did not have a public health major. So I was kind of all over the place, which only made it more important that I really paid attention to what the reasons were that I was going to end up choosing whatever school that I ended up choosing. There were actually two reasons that I decided to choose Dennison, and they were both based off of experiences that I had when I was doing some kind of perspective student visit. So if you're thinking about coming to Dennison, whether it's applying or committing, I would definitely make sure that you get on campus that you can participate in some of our classes, some of our student life. Um and really see if if it's a place that you could see yourself being for four years s o for me, I ended up going to a I believe it was a crew studies class, although I honestly can't really remember the department. Um, my senior year, I went to a class at Denison on Dhe. There were a few things that I really, really appreciate it about the structure of the class, the first being that it was small. So like most other liberal arts schools, we have a small student body, which means that we have small classes that range from about, you know, 10 to 20 people, 25 max per class. So this class was probably about 15 students, and, um, I, for those 50 minutes, got to really engage in discussion on and learn about what the students in that cost we're learning about, which I thought was really, really cool on and that is definitely something that has held up. So whether it's been in a bio class or a Kem costs or an anthropology class or an ethics class, most of my professors at Denison have really, really focused on making sure that the class is our discussion based and that we can engage in a dialogue and learn from each other as well as learning about the topic that we're studying. I think that that is also one of the best ways to learn. I think that what it shows is that Dennison, especially in an academic sense, is both a challenging but supportive environment. So because we get to talk to each other because we get Tau have small group discussions, students are here to both, you know, succeed individually and support themselves and also support the people around them and challenge the people around them. So it's not kind of like a race to the top who's best but environment more so where we understand that everyone is on their own course and we do what we can to support and challenge one another, which I think is really important, and I think that that has really held up in the three years that I've been here. The second reason that I ended up choosing Dennison was actually on another perspective. Um, he's our president, and he's fantastic. Some what he did was he was making his speech to the group of perspective students that was there that weekend. Um, and, you know, I actually don't remember most of the speech, which is funny, but I do remember the very end of the speech. Something he said to us was that, you know, he didn't really care where we went. If you choose something else, if you find another place, that's better for you. Like, I hope you do whatever is going to be best for you, for your career, for your personal life, whatever it may be. So not only did I find that, um, you know, very, very valuable in terms of, like, the administration at the school. He also said, um, at the very end that it's not the school that makes the students better but the students that make the school better. So that was a rhetoric that I hadn't really heard at a lot of other places that I had visited. He basically, you know, assured us that he was grateful for what we had already contributed as prospective students. So even coming to campus, sharing our interests and our passions asking questions, all of that kind of stuff had already helped the school to progress in some way. Um, and even if we left and never came back, we would have done something to make the university and the institution better. So that was something that I really, really appreciate it and I think has also held up in my time here. It is really the students that push the school forward, and you know it is the other way around as well. The emphasis is on the students rather than on the institution. So those are my two reasons in terms of why I ended up choosing Dennison. I think that they're both really important, and I think that they both really reflect the kind of campus climate and the culture that we have at Denison. Um yeah, And if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to our ambitions department. I hope that this has helped you in your process and your journey on choosing the right school for you.
