My name is Kate Muneer and I'm the director of college advising. One of the biggest questions that we get about the college application process is what you should do with your summers. The college application is made up as both hard and soft factors. A successful application has both incredibly successful and impressive numbers like grades, test scores and activities and those we call the heart factors. The soft factors are the things like your personality and how you spend your time that really say a lot about you. The soft factors are just as important as the hard factors and a great summer builds on both of those factors. So consider what makes impressive addition to your resume. Often a pre college summer program at the school that you're most excited about is a really great choice and some of you have probably signed up for those already. So the other question is, what do you do around those really big academic harm factor programs that you spent a lot of time? That free time is a great way to develop a soft factors. These can be things that you could write a fun essay about, you might be able to get a part time job. I've seen a lot of wonderful essays about working in a grocery store or working at a cafe over the summer that really say a lot about who a student kids as an african, it also shows responsibility, humility and diligence, explore a new hobby routine and develop the ones that you already love by continuing on what you're passionate about throughout the summer. You develop a basic through line in your application that will be really appealing to admissions officers. Another thing that you could do is come up with a passion project and started and hopefully finish it. Your goal is to finish the through lines of what you focus on during the year. If you're really into stemmed, you could do some hackathons in the summer or you can even build your own robot from scratch in your garage, whatever the goal is, I want to show initiative and don't let fear get in the way of doing what you want to do. Of course, volunteering is always a great approach. Just make sure that you're not just padding your resume, volunteer with something that fits your interest in passions.
