Orientation at Vanderbilt Owen

In today's video, I want to talk to you about what it was like during Vanderbilt Owens orientation process. So before we even began our orientation, there were a bunch of things that we had to complete. So one of them, they had a mandatory book that they wanted all of us to read ours this year was how to be an anti racist on This did come up again during orientation, throughout different panels and group discussions, and then one of the other things that we had to dio we had to take a math diagnostic test. It's not grated, but it just kind of gives you a better understanding of where you are on the quant side of things. We had a mandatory quant boot camp as well as the stats boot camp again, These are mandatory, but they're not grated, and they just really gave you and the Professor a better understanding of where you're kind of coming into the semester with. So the actual orientation was about two weeks, and it was every day for a few hours, and every day there were different panels with faculty, alumni, current students, and every day they also gave us the opportunity to have lunch with our future classmates. Um, you know, even though that we were completely virtual during orientation because of co vid Vanderbilt did a wonderful job at really facilitating kind of making those connections before we actually started the semester. So there are three things that I want to talk about that really stood out to me during the orientation process. So one of them was a session with your future communications professor Kimberly Pace. During this session, she really goes into how to market yourself and how to bring out and highlight that aspect of your personality and your experience that make you a desirable candidate. You know, for future employers, the second thing is an info session with the Leadership Development Program. So before you arrive at Owen, you will take the Hogan Assessment, which is a personality based assessment that really highlights. You know how you deal with stressful situations, what your strengths are. They use this information to help place you within the leadership development program. The majority of Owen students do participate, and I would highly highly recommend that you take advantage of this absolutely free resource. So I was paired with a coach and I will meet with her four times throughout year one, and she really helps to develop me. You know, figure out what my weaknesses are and what my strengths are is a leader. You know how I can use my time and conversations with her as well as my business school experience, to make me into a better leader when I when I enter the workforce. The last thing that I want to highlight from the orientation process was an info session with the Career Management Center, also known as the CMC. You will hear ah, lot from them during your time at Owen, but they're really the ones to help you with your job search figure out. You know what job industry is best suited for where you want to end up in the long run. They'll help you with resume rating interviews. Eso they're really a great resource to use from Day one, and Owen also did a bunch of other fun things for us. Um, at night they would have virtual trivia nights, and it was also a good time. Just toe kind of relax for a little bit and get to know some of your classmates before you actually meet them in the classroom. Another really useful thing that Owen does on the last day of orientation. Uh, they have professional headshots done for you so you can use them on your LinkedIn and, you know, whatever other media you might have going on.
