Welcome to my short video Siri's covering the M s Finance program or the MSF program at the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management. So in this video, I'm gonna be discussing a little bit about my personal background, a quick overview of Vanderbilt, then why I specifically chose the program and then some application advice for some perspective students out there. So my name is John Marble, and I am a current M s finance student at the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management. So I was raised just outside Minneapolis, Minnesota, and I was then recruited out of high school to play Division one lacrosse for Colgate University. So I graduated from Colgate this past May with a degree in economics and enrolled in the MSF program at Vanderbilt. So in terms of where I really got interested in finance was during my sophomore year, summer at the one in School of Economics, and that led me to pursue an investment banking internship in New York City during my junior year, summer and then summer business analysts internship with the distress credit firm. This pass our following my completion of the MSF program this may up in 2021 I will be joining Paris Williams in their headquarters in their Richmond office. So Vanderbilt University is located in Nashville, Tennessee, which is just a great place to be. I don't know if you know this, but there's an awesome live music scene and the weather is pretty great there year round. So there's plenty of outdoor activities for really any interests and hobbies you might have outside of school. So in terms of the demographics of Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt undergraduate program has roughly 7000 students, and those students are both domestic and international, coming from all over the place on. It's kind of the same thing theme for the Owen Graduate School. Um, it is a little bit smaller, with around 6800 people enrolled in it currently, and in terms of the M s finance program, it's actually very small, makes up a a very small proportion of the Owen graduate school with roughly 80 students. How I want to tell you a little bit more about why I chose the MSF program at Vanderbilt in particular, and it really boils down to three main reasons. Following my graduation from Colgate, I really knew that I wanted to combine my liberal arts background with a more technical skill set based in finance. So cool get really taught me the values of critical thinking and strong communication skills, both in written and verbal form, where Vanderbilt has provided me with the technical skill set that's needed for an entry level analyst position within the finance industry. Vanderbilt is one of the top masters and science and finance programs in the country and is consistently ranked within the top five national. Um, adding such a great name to my resume and showing that I'm working on those technical skills while learning from world renowned faculty and staff was really an important aspect leading up to my decision. Only the most important aspect for me in making my decision to join the MSF program at Vanderbilt was what I wanted to do personally. Ah, career wise following my graduation, so I knew I wanted to do investment banking following my positive internship experience my junior year, Summer and Vanderbilt has a proven track record of placing their students into the finance industry what they 100% placement rate for the 2019 graduating class. More specifically, what was really exciting for me was to see that out of that class, over 50% of them were going into investment banking. What that really told me was that they do an awesome job preparing their students for a career in investment banking, especially at the analyst level on that's really due to what they what they provide you even before you step on campus. So Vanderbilt has an awesome career management center that will start working with you before you even step on campus so that you're ready for your network gang and your interviews that arrive quickly in the fall once you step foot on campus. Um, additionally, the curriculum is highly customizable, so even if you don't want to go into investment banking, you can customize that curriculum to fit your needs. Whether you're looking to get into maybe equity research, consulting, asset management or whatever industry really fascinates you, Andi, as I said earlier, Nashville is just such a great place to be with live music scene and plenty of outdoor activities. Some of my personal favorites are the live music, as well as the plethora of great golf courses in and around the Nashville area. My first video, I want to touch a little bit mawr on the application process. So this is going to be broken up into two main segments where I'm going to touch on what the application process is and what it consists of, and then what the admissions team at Vanderbilt is looking for. So the application process is pretty straightforward. Um, in terms of what the Vanderbilt team and the admissions team is really looking for out of you is they want you to tell them your story. They want to get to know you on a personal level and discover your personal and professional interests S. So I think the best way to go about preparing this is like a normal interview process. So think about your your strengths, your weaknesses, what your short and long term goals. Really, the most important question that you're going to need to answer is why Vanderbilt? So why does the MSF program fit you, and why do you want to join it and maybe what you'll bring to the table. So what they're really evaluating people on is a common set of criteria, which involves your communication skills, your interpersonal skills and your professional attire, and also your professional presence. They want to know that your hard working and that you can communicate effectively and you can work within teams. One thing I do want to say that's very important is you do not need tohave a math background in economics, background or a finance background to get into this program. What you do definitely need is an interesting finance, and you need to express that in your essays and also in your interview, um, so overall for me, I could not be happier after joining this program. The classes have been incredibly interesting, and the professors and staff and the people I've got to meet along the way have been just absolutely amazing.
