Matthias: Why I Chose Pacific
The following is an computer-generated summary of the video transcript.
I am Matthias. I studied political science and philosophy. I'm here today to just tell you a real story. I mean, that's the whole point of these videos is to attract students through the reality of the education that you should get at the campus where you're thinking about going. If you're a prospective student. I got to say the political science department is on point. We have some tremendous professors there. I'll just say why I chose this school and that is because of the Socratic discussion model. It's something you really won't find across the state of California. I don't even know if other universities do it across the globe, across the world, across the nation. Uh, but it's a mechanism where you basically just talk in classes with other students about the certain topic that is at hand. You refute ideas or agree with ideas, and you build on those ideas or you say, if they should be extinguished, however, everybody has an equal footing in those classrooms and equal opportunity to make a case for why they believe in what they believe in, you know what other schools? You may come across models where this is the way it is, and this is how we're going to go about it. However, when you are thinking about science, science isn't meant to shutout beliefs. Science has meant to be open to the capacity of the what we know to be modified. You know, it's not the 13th century church, you know? I mean, when science developed, it was as a means to have the ability to question ideas, just to be able to question and just to be able to talk about it, not not to refute and not to make an argument against it. But just a question and say, maybe this claim deserves to be substantiated by a given amount of evidence. So I find this to be true at this university, it is beautiful. You know, if you just go online, I might have to put some pictures of it in this video, but this is just a short introduction. I chose the school because it is beautiful. I'd never thought I would be able to attend such a school. Um, you know, I wrote some papers. or, you know, apply for some scholarships and, um, talked to some advisers and they made it real for me. So hopefully you could talk to somebody if you really wanted to go there? You know, you could reach out. And there's somebody most likely willing toe adopt you in. Because that's how I felt when I when I became a part of this community, is I felt like they wanted me in there. Of course I wanted to go. But there are also just as much willing to say, Hey, you are now one of us. You know, I find out to be extremely reassuring. Um, honestly, if any of you really want to be a part of this community, it's all up to you. You know, it's all up to you, to say I want that and then you will see that somebody will reach out. And that's why ultimately did choose the school was yes, I did want to go. And I was extremely nervous to make myself vulnerable to be called part of the community. because most of the time you think if I don't have the certain criteria in place, I can't be a part of that. You know, if you don't have the ticket to get into Disneyland. How can you ever go to Disneyland? But this isn't the case. This is the University of the Pacific, where if you want to be there, they will help you be there. And if you ever are need assistance while you're there, you're gonna find that support. This is not just a university. I would call it a community, it is a true community that behaves like family. So if you're considering it, please reach out. And, um, I probably will do some information of myself. Like where you could reach out to me and Yeah, let's make it happen.
