I am a senior here at ST Ambrose University and I'm gonna be talking to you a little bit more about the school of social work today, specifically the Bachelor of social work program that we have here on the main campus, which is where I'm at right now. So first of all, I just want to say that I am a psychology and social work major and I love both departments in both schools and I'm gonna be focusing more heavily on the school social work because they have a more specific program that you have to apply to when you're in school here that you can't just get into right away. So I chose to do social work because I always knew I wanted to be in helping profession. Um and I am extremely passionate about mental health. So I'm going to get my B. S. W. And I'm also going to get my MSW. So the classes for the School of social work, our cohort style, which is really nice. So basically you will apply for the program at the end of your sophomore year, but whenever you have the credits to be a sophomore, you can apply. The application is not super difficult, you write a paper and you get some references and you just answer some basic questions. Um and then you'll find out if you've got and if you did you start classes the following fall. So you have a cohort that you go through the entire program with your junior and senior year will be with the same people. It's amazing because you get to build real connections with them and relationships throughout two years and so four different semesters, you're going through the same thing together. Most of our classes, our lectures, we don't have any labs and the course work is a lot of reading and papers, very few tests and if we do have tests or quizzes, the pretty short and simple, so and mostly readings mostly applying what we're learning into the real world, which is amazing because it was so different for me going from high school to this because I felt like in high school we all are thinking like, when am I ever going to use this, or like this doesn't even apply to the real world, in the work I want to do. It completely shifts in college because everything you're doing, everything you're talking about in your classes, you're thinking like, how am I going to apply this to my profession. The classes are taught by faculty alone, there's no t days or anything like that. Another great advantage of the BMW program here is Having a built in field experience and that is for the duration of your senior year, you are able to have an internship. Most people do it here in the quad cities, but really it can be anywhere. You have a field placement and you work there 13 hours a week, on average, for the duration of your senior year. Like I said, you get to have experience in the field and you're working with other social workers and other professionals that are in your line of work that you want to go into. Um and so you're getting that real world experience, building your resume and all that kind of stuff while you're in school.
