Elena Kissel - Online Classroom Experience at Parker University
The following is an computer-generated summary of the video transcript.
Hi, everyone. My name is Elena, and I'm a student at Health Information Management Program at Parker University. In this video, I will talk a little bit more about our online classroom experience. As I mentioned in previous videos, the program takes about 3.5 years to complete, and it's 100% online. It will prepare you to work in hospitals, family centers, private health practices, government health agencies, and other facilities. You will gain valuable insight with courses in health management, health care statistics, information technology and systems, organization management, and privacy and security of healthcare records. One of the things that I like about the program is that each class takes only four weeks to complete, so you don't get burned out from doing 100 things at a time. The program is very flexible, but you do have to plan your time accordingly in order to meet all the requirements. Each week will include the following items. The first item is discussion boards. In this activity, we usually have to post the discussion by Wednesday of each week and reply to two of our classmates either by Friday or by Sunday of that same week. In discussion words we talk about essential aspects that each class covers. For example, how to properly release a medical record to a patient. And the second activity is reading the assigned chapters. Usually it's three to four chapters per week, depending on the workload. They third activity is watching the instructor's video or presentation. In their videos, they usually cover information that's going to be on quizzes or they talk about the final project. And you can also ask all of your questions in those videos. You can watch a video live at a scheduled time, but if you're not available, you can play the recording as many times as you need. Activity number four includes quizzes and tests. There is usually one quiz at the end of each week and one final examination at the end of the week four that covers all the information that we learned in the class. The last activity is final project. This could include a paper, an essay presentation, or case study. For example, in one of the classes, I had to write a paper where I described a contingency plan for one of the Dallas health care facilities. I included information such as proper steps of securing health care records in case of flood or fire. Most of the classes are following the same structure, so you won't have any unpleasant surprises. We have one week off for spring break, one week off at the end of summer, and two weeks for Christmas break. But if you need to take a vacation any other time, you can still do so, as long as you can have your book, your laptop, and Internet access wherever you go. In case you have an emergency and cannot submit your assignment on time, you can always reach out to your instructor or program director. They are very responsive and very helpful, so they can work with you on giving you an extension. I have a full time job, so I followed pretty much the same routine every week. I read for two to three hours a day after work and I try to do also required postings and weekly assignments by the end of Thursday night. Then on Friday and Saturday, I work on the final project, so that way I can have the whole Sunday off to spend time with my family, relax, and have fun. This course will definitely help you to learn how to plan your time and be successful at what you do without getting overwhelmed. I hope you find this information helpful. And thank you so much for watching.
