I'm Lauren Loss, a senior Peter Major at Nebraska Wesleyan University, and I will be your virtual mentor for this new, unique college climate. I know this time has been really confusing for all of us, and we're trying our best to make it seem as normal as possible. I am going to explain to you how my college experience waas in quarantine and with online classes, and I'm hoping I can help you out a little bit. I'm from Oro Valley, Arizona, which is very far from Nebraska, but I lived in Papillion, Nebraska, and then moved to Arizona, and currently I am in Rancho Cucamonga, California, which is again floor from Nebraska. I thought that the quarantine and online classes wouldn't be that bad because I love being at home. I really am used to walking around and being just more active because I'm out of the house and going to class. This new situation with college being online has been really bad for my specific major extracurriculars that I am in. The day I found out that classes were going to be online, I kind of lost my purpose just for a little bit. When I found out that that was gone, I was kind of like, Why am I here? My purpose is to perform and sing, and when I didn't have that, I was really lacking in that area of my education. Another con was that I started really second guessing if I'm good enough in feeder and singing and performing, and I really doubted what I should do with my future career already doubt myself a lot, So quarantine just allowed be to think about that more. I really shouldn't be spending brainpower on that kind of thinking. Some pros if we can say that during this really unfortunate time, one pro was that we had Zoom. Two of my classes were held over resume and one meeting for my on campus video social media jobs. That was really helpful that we could, trying to make it as normal as possible by still interacting with each other, even if it wasn't physically in the same room interaction. Even though I doubted myself a lot, I also had time to think more about my profession, how I can improve myself and ways I can get closer to the end goal of having a career I enjoy. I did have more time to roller skate, which was great because it's very fun. My cousin was able to get me to download Tic Tac and think I saying two videos on there. I usually only sing for classes and shows, so that was something different. I noticed that I practiced mawr during online classes because I had more time. I was also really lucky that I am a student videographer for the marketing department on campus, and for about a month everyone's jobs were put on hold. Because I didn't video editing, I was able to go back to my job because it would just be me in the office editing. So I was able to make the Class of 2020 Final Walk at our university. I was able to make that which was really cool, that I could help seniors feel a little bit or comforted about this whole situation. We got an email from the president of the university, and he said we would be going back in person, which is amazing. I really, really, really want to be in that one the way that the semester is laid out. We starts a week early, so August 17th and we don't get any breaks until Thanksgiving break, and then all the way until the end of winter break. We're doing online classes to try to avoid some wave from people travelling and then coming back. As of now, we don't know anything about spring semester, but I also really hope that it's in person because I want to do curtains the musical really badly. Before I received the email from the president, I thought about a gap here because the main reason I went to the university was to be in musicals. I would be fine with a face shield, actually, because it's plastic and you can still see the person's facial expressions when the act, if that's what it takes to be able to do shows I am fine with. If you watching are considering applying to Nebraska, West University or any institution next year, I recommend that you look at the potential major that you were interested in and seeing if that could be done online. If you're interested in math or English, that might be easier to take online than theater, so just think about what your interests are. If your interests can be translated into online classes, ask yourself if you're okay with taking classes online or taking a gap here and then starting freshman year a year later. If it really makes sense to enroll in the university and find out that the classes will be completely online versus community college classes, which are cheaper, think about temporary alternatives to college while you're waiting to have that complete college experience, acting and dance classes online. Or take voice lessons online and save money instead of enrolling an online university classes. Spend your money on other ways you can learn and educate yourself and improve yourself. Soas College Still work it With all things considered. I personally believe that college is worth it when you are able to have all of the in person experiences choir in person musicals in person, you can make online videos with musical cast or acquire, but it's not the same as when you've been all sing in the same room and hear each other. I hope I was able to give you some insight on what college was like during this pandemic, so you can kind of have more of an understanding of what college might be like for you your freshman year. I really, really hope that freshman year is able to be special and memorable, and hopefully as unaffected by this virus, is I really hope I helped you out and good luck.
