The following is an computer-generated summary of the video transcript.
We're going to be talking about social life here at how it ends. Your first year, Um, you'll be doing orientation weekend, and this will be a weekend where it's just you and the rest of the first year students so that everyone can get connected and get to know each other. We'll have a bunch of events such as, like a little party, get together. Um, we'll have just a bunch of activities throughout the day and the night for students to do to get to get more connective in this new community in this new home that they'll have together during orientation weekend, There will also be the starving ceremony for incoming freshmen. So this is where all the fresh will gather around the Eagle statue. During 1981 there was a fatal car crash for six student leaders on campus. During that time, it was really hard for the campus, and some reporters came, um, Thio tell about what they saw, and when they left, they said that we were a campus of permitting faith and so years later, we put up this eagle statue with six eagles to represent six students to remind our campus to always be campus of permitting faith, but also that every student here matters were not just numbers. So after that story, President Mullen will give each student scarf and the scarf is supposed to be given away at the end of your four years here, to someone who helped you to grow who really enriched your time here at Houghton. Um, and this is just again to symbolize that here at home and we grow together. We learn together, we laughed together when we're doing life together. So after a freshman orientation, of course, they're still a bunch of stuff going on campus. We have a group called Cab, which is the campus activities board. Um, and they set up a lot of the events that we have So captains a bunch of stuff such as roller skating parties. Um, and this is where students during finals week will be served at midnight breakfast by professors, um, and faculty members. Um, which is a lot of fun and you can see a picture right here every Thursday night. Or if you'd rather just, um, sit and watch people perform. Here's a clip of one of our coffeehouses way the oh my favorites is actually cab couch eso. During our homecoming soccer game, each person who arrived to the game will get a raffle tickets, and at halftime, cab will pick a raffle ticket and whoever wins will get a pizza. There will be a couch on the track that goes around the soccer fields. They will be able to sit front and center, eating pizza, watching the game with a few friends, which is really cool. There's so many other events, such as a movie night on the Quad, Karaoke, Live Action Clue Night, Um, and just so many more. Something that happens each semester is spot, and this is kind of a mix between a talent and comedy show. Um, and each semester this is run by different people and it has a different theme. So here's some of the themes from previous years A Z you can see we like to use a plan words we like to be funny on. It's a really great time for us to all just get together and left together In addition to all the events put on by cab will also have events put on by SDA, which is a student government, a swell as a residence life as you've seen in previous video. So if after all that, all the events we put on throughout the year, um, all the homework that you'll be doing and if you're involved in sports or music programs all of that, if you still want more to dio we're surrounded by so much land. Like I said in a previous video, even though we are a smaller campus, we have 1300 acres of land. So I'm actually sitting, um, at a fire pit, which is on one of our trials, and we have multiple trials. Um, we have more fire pits as well as a ropes course. In addition to all this, um, we're also about 20 minutes away from left worth, which is a state park which several years ago was voted the number one state park in the nation, which is pretty cool. It's so beautiful and a bunch of our students will take advantage of that. So that's always something you could do it as well. Um, we are surrounded by nature here, um, in Allegheny County and we love it. We love to take advantage of the fact that we have all of this around us. So that has been my take on social life here at Houghton.
