[music]Hi there,my name is Glenn EllisI use they, them,or she, her, pronouns.I am a third yearat Hampshire College.I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma.I lived in Broken Arrow,which isa small town basicallyjust on the outskirts.I have really enjoyedbeing out of state.My mom really wanted meto have visited the colleges10that I went tobefore I went to one.11We could only affordto visit one state,12so I pretty muchthrew a dart at a map, and13Massachusetts it was.14It's not been as differentas you might expect.15Hampshire does havea really good community.16I am studying Persian,the language,17and Middle Eastern history,18with a particular interestin medieval history19and the history of science.20I was expectingto study linguistics.21I wanted to basically just take as manyUMass linguistics classes as I could22because it's a top-ranked schoolfor linguistics.23Hampshire, withthe Five College Consortium,24lets you take so many classesoutside of just Hampshire classes.25The opportunities areseriously endless.26I have taken classes at all ofthe five colleges except for Smith.27The reason why I switchedfrom linguistics is that when I was28in my first semester, I took a classwith Salman Hameed, who's my advisor,29on the History of Sciencein the Muslim World.30We challenged the whole conceptof the Muslim world.31We talked about all of these really,really interesting advances in science,32eye surgery, and astronomy,33and all the stuffthat I'd had never heard of.34It made me very excited.35My favorite part about Hampshireis probably just the academic freedom36and the waythat we structure our classes.37You do so manydifferent kinds of projects,38you can do them on pretty muchwhatever you want.39Everyone in your Hampshire classesis bringing their own experiences40and their own interest to the tableand it's really cool.41I learn from my classmates,42not just as much as I learnfrom teachers and my books,43but a pretty solid amount.44I also really enjoy the classes thatI've taken at the five colleges.45I've written somereally intense research papers,46had some interesting conversations,and made friends all over.47My favorite places to hang outon campus are the Kern Center48and I also really like just walkingtowards the health center.49There's a little key house buildingthat's quite beautiful.50I haunt the music and dance buildingevery so often.51In some of my later videos,52you are going to seemy friend Tessa and I exploring that.53Right now, I am takingfour classes. Persian IV,54History of the Middle Eastfrom 500 to 1600,55because I have taken a lotof specialty classes.56Contemporary Syriain Regional and Global context,57with a Hampshire professor,who's currently teaching at UMass.58Then a class on Shahnameh,which is the national epic of Iran.59Both of the students in the class,Rosanne and I,60are Hampshire studentstudying Persian.61We get to read one of the storiesin the Shahnameh in Persian,62in 10th century Persian.63We're translating it,it's so fun.64It's so incredibly fun, I'm so you don'tI'm so excited.65It's not even funnyhow excited I am.66My hobbies are social dance,I sew and embroider.67I've made some of the clothesin my wardrobe68and I've also repairedbasically all of them.69There's a really greatContra Collective at Hampshire70that pays for students to go toContra on Wednesday nights in Amherst71during normal years.72Also takes us tothe Flurry Festival,73which is this huge beautifuldance festival in Saratoga Springs.74I'm involved inthe Salsa Rueda and Tango Club.75The Salsa Rueda is a kind of dancedeveloped in Cuba76by the most skilled salsa dancers.77Most of them weremarried to their partners.78It was a game that they played,79where they danced in a circleand passed partners around80and all of the calls aretongue-in-cheek infidelity.81It's like, "Dame,"give me a new one.82One of them is literally,"Put a horn on his head,"83[Spanish language].84It's fun, it's really fun, and it'sopen to dancers of all levels,85which is something that I really loveabout it and I've tried to keep alive.86Obviously, with COVIDthings have been a little harder,87but we are still trying to doon-line events.88Also, I've pressed my roommatesinto learning to dance.89My most recent weird interesthas been nålebinding,90which is one of the oldest formsof needlework in the world.91I'm making a silly hat.92It is not super far along, butit's further along than it could be.93I've been making itto keep my hands busy94while I am listening tomy professors talk in class.95How nålebinding works is,you use short pieces of thread,96not the entire ball of yarn.97You work it off of your thumb.98I've always had a hard timekeeping my tension even99in crochet and knitting,100but when I'm working off my thumb,I can really feel how it is101and what it's doing.102Making new stitchesis not that bad.103That's somethingthat I've gotten interested in.104I'm also currently makinga T-tunic inspired dress,105T-tunics being one of the simplestforms of European clothing106that were wornin the Medieval period,107accurate until,I want to say the 12th century.108I want to say that 12th century,I hope it's the 12th century.109It may have been the 13th though.110I watch a lot of anime.I really like dressing up fancy.111In fact, my friends and I are tryingto institute a New Hampshire tradition112called Fancy Fridays,where we just wear113all of the swag.114All of our formal dresses,our party dresses,115our satin cocktail dresses,our ball gowns, whatever,116that's what we wear on Fridays.117If you come to Hampshire,118I would invite youto make Fancy Fridays a thing.119I chose Hampshirein a silly way.120Throw a dart at a map,121see what colleges you get into,decide which one you like best.122As a former home-schooler123and someone who's alwaysreally enjoyed independent work124and not enjoyed being forced to doa bunch of tedious worksheets,125Hampshire has beenabsolutely perfect.126I have really, really enjoyedmy experience here.127I also think that our focuson interdisciplinary connections128is very valuable becauseit doesn't limit you in any way.129In fact, it encourages youto try different things.130I also think that our focuson social justice131and community-building is reallyimportant and really insightful.132I've learned a lot here133that I'm not sureI would've learned at other places.134I hope youenjoyed this video.135I hope you will join me136on other videos,throughout Hampshire's campus,137through my very thrilling dorm room,et cetera, et cetera.
