so as, ah, person who likes to use. They/them pronouns, but feels awkward about it in places that are not very welcoming. I love that Hampshire is a place where we all ask each other's pronouns. And if the students are good about it, professors are almost always good about it. And if not other students in class will correct them. That's a pro week. We're very sensitive people's pronouns. And I know people have changed their pronouns and their names all the time, and it's fine and everybody just like, Okay, what's your preferred name? Okay, what's your preferred pronouns? Can we do anything to make your life easier? I used that I was given at birth, but I still tell people that I'm using those pronouns and I feel like that kind of makes it a better community, because when everybody is saying like, hey here's a pronouns I use Doesn't feel like it's just you being like, Could you maybe do something for me? It's like, Oh, yeah, Tessa uses she/her pronouns and I will make sure people know this. Yeah, yeah, and Glenn uses they/them pronouns, When when people, don't when you don't know someone's pronouns or don't remember them. Everyone default to they/them like it's really interesting. actually,Yeah, It's just like if I don't know what your pronouns are, I'll be like, Oh, they their skirt looks super cute. Like you don't You don't go like he/his shirt like his skirt looks super cute. Her shirt, her skirt look super cute. It's Why did I choose the word skirt? It's very much defaults to they/ them, Which is which is kind of nice. Pronouns are still a pretty big thing within the five colleges. Yeah, I have found Smith and Mount Holyoke. Yeah, Yeah. and Umass a bit too. Yeah, not Amherst classes so far, but I will only taking classes with like two professors. Actually, I think the only reason why I'm aware about it at Umass because ultimately my class, uses they/ them pronouns So they introduce themselves using they/them pronouns. But nobody else introduce themselves using pronouns. Yeah, we're next in Mount Holyoke. You introduce using pronouns pretty much yeah and that's very nice. What are the Hampshire students Stereotypes? Are there Hampshire students. Stereotypes. Not getting any work done, I guess. Oh, Hampshire time being late to things being late to things that a major student stereotype and professors will refer to it as being on Hampshire time. And it annoys me so much. I am not late. To things, But I do also know people who are. But yes, it's just a stereotype. And if you are late to things, I will not personally come in to your house and be like. Have you considered having a schedule? Have you? Here is an alarm clock. Let me help you write this down, Glenn. Like here's an alarm clock. Here is three spreadsheets here, you go. Here. I've organized your life so that you don't have to have this problem anymore. Don't worry, It was fun. Let me just show this to you and here some tea as well. Tessa's been on the receiving and the best that you can kind of tell. Well, for me, it would be like a chocolate bar. Nutty though.Yeah yeah. Do we want to talk about the sort of like culture of activism slash critical social? Yeah. Not everyone on campus is an activist. Yes, but that is a stereotype. That is a stereotype. Like we do in basically all of the classes I've had here talk a lot about different identities and marginalization and systemic problems. But when I've done activism hasn't necessarily been related to those things and also not have to be an activist at Hampshire College. But it's really cool if you do want to be an activist because you will find a lot of people support you. Yes, like yes, there's like you're gonna talk about it. And literally all of your classes, student climate is probably very queer. Yes, it's not actually that everyone on campus is queer. Tessa is my beautiful straight friend. I love her. I'm so glad to have one of my eyes. I have actually been in some communities where it feels uncomfortable to be straight here in Hampshire. But that's only a few. And I have a lovely, lovely friends. This video is just gonna be, like 40 minutes of us hugging. It's fine. Okay? It's only 15 minutes of us hugging right now. So my advice to myself this is as a senior is I'm so sorry. Yeah. My advice to myself as a senior is it will get better. Yes. You might not know that things are wrong right now, but it will get better on the rat race of college Admissions will end one way or another, and I am sure that you will succeed at whatever college you end up with for my senior year self. It's Hampshire. Yeah, the one college you applied to, you're gonna get into. Don't worry. I didn't just apply to one college. I mean, I did, but I applied, like early decision. I think it was. And so I had gotten into Hampshire, which I did. I was going to have to, like, email the other schools and tell them like I think that I could go to them and the deadlines for all my other schools were like, three months after I was going to hear back from Hampshire. So I was like, I don't really want to write any more essays than I have to. What do you think defines Hampshire college or sets it apart from other schools? We don't talk about the div system. Yeah, it's div I div II and div III, 4 years because div II is two years our second year div II to which means that we're actually 3rd years. But people always think we're sophomores. Yeah, every single time. It is very confusing. Your first year, you have to seminars that you have to take that are very broad and are meant to introduce you to a range of studies, and then you can take whatever classes you want. And you don't have requirements. You will get guidance from your advisor. But that's sort of it, requirements that we had were, like very broad thing in natural science to maths like You can take an animal behavior never did math. I did How People Learn. That's what I That's what I did. It was one of my favorite classes. I only took it because I had to and it has shaped some of the classes. I've taken since, and there's your div II which is what we're in. I'm not really sure what really defines it. You kind of just do whatever, but you kind of prepare for your div. Three. There's like some requirements I guess. I feel like your requirements for div II our CL2. which yes, yes, but you're supposed to be You like broadening what you want to do and defining it so that we get to your div IIIyou're ready, and then your div III is a big project. Yes, I personally loved div III as somebody who has not done theirs yet because in the acting and dance major, you get to be in a bunch of it. I'm actually studying acting for film because of the Div III that I was in my first year, they're really cool. And then it also makes you excited to your own project because you get to see all these other ones. But your div doesn't have to be like mine is gonna be performance. But Glenn's is probably gonna be some huge essay, possibly several huge essays, I haven't decided. I haven't decided yet, either About what type of performance and it's gonna be. But you really get to work with your advisors on it. I feel like Hampshire is really good at showing you like the options as in like, you could see other you kind of examples of other people's like my first year. I didn't participate in any Divs, but I did know a lot of people in the neuroscience lab which no longer exists. But I got to see a lot of natural science div threes. I was really surprised by how nerdy they were able to get. It was basically like I have jury rigged my own science equipment and also this is basically a publishable paper, and it was very impressive. So div three. It's not just one project. You do have some structure. You have to do three advanced learning activities which were like be TA Take a graduate class blah blah blah, blah blah. I did not actually know that. Yeah, OK, I'll be a TA for something. Yeah, they're also very flexible. Yes. So what counts is your advanced learning activity can change I'm hugging you again. Alright, Thank you for watching our video I hope you learned something. I hope you come to Hampshire. Yeah, I also hope you come to Hampshire.
