-Hi, it's me, Abigail.Today I am going to talk to youabout student life and campus lifehere at Hampshire College.I remember as a first year studentwhen I first arrived to campusI was nervous and excitedand I really wanted to makefriends, but I didn't know how.So I'm going to startwith that, making friends.Making friends is scary, but notas difficult as you would think.Hampshire only really has single dorms,10so everyone will live intheir own little space11and for some people they think thatthat means that they won't make friends,12because they won't be in a double.13That's not true.14What ends up usually happening15and what happened for me was everyone inthe hall has kind of left their door open16and then when you would walk bya room and you saw someone in there,17you talk to them and that washow I made my first four friends.18We just found each other by havingopen doors, which was really easy.19Then, the next best way was that wewould go to the dining commons to eat.20This person knew this personand we would sit with their friends.21Then we had this big huge group of people22that I knew half of and one ofmy friends knew the other half of23and then we would all hang out.24Then we all became friends.25Dining commons are a really importantway of getting to know people26and also just having your door open27and being an open, invitingperson the first few days of campus.28Not to mention your orientation group,29which you're going to getto know all of those people30as you are getting to knowthe campus when you are brought on.31Worried about making friends?32Don't be.33In case you are, there areother ways, student groups.34Hampshire has lots and lots ofdifferent student groups, clubs35or different activities thatyou can just be a part of.36We have a chess club, wehave multiple acapella groups,37we have a band group, we have a salsagroup, we have a hula hooping group.38We have a co-op on campus thatyou can volunteer and be a part of.39We have gaming groups,we have card game groups,40but then also board gamegroups, and video game groups.41There's so many differentthings that you can be a part of.42Filming groups.43There's a horror collective on campus.44There are so many different thingsthat you can do on campus.45If there isn't one thatyou are interested in,46you can find a couple ofother people who are interested47and you can start your own club.48Clubs are a great way to make friends, but then we also have OPRA courses.49OPRA, which stands for OutdoorPrograms and Recreational Activities.50There are things likestrengthening and conditioning,51which takes place in the weight room.52Kayaking,53then hiking, climbing and then there'salso the OPRA martial arts courses.54There are lots of different things thatyou can do on campus to get involved,55but then also to meet other peoplewho are interested in different things,56especially meeting students who areolder than you doing their Div II,57especially students doing their Div III.58Actually doing Div IIIprojects with Div III students59is another great way to meet people.60I met some of the coolest people61when I was a part of a playfor a Div III student last year62and it was one of the most fun things I'vedone in a really long time on campus.63Back to the dining commons.64Eating on campus, eating is huge.65Everybody likes to eat.66As a first year student, you don't really need to worry67because we have our OneCards, and aOneCard will get you into your building,68will get you your meal swipes,69it has your ID number on it,that's important for some things.70There's the dining commons on campus.71There's the bridge, which is inbetween the library and the RCC.72There's an actual bridge that you cango across, that's where the food is.73Then there's The Kern on campus, which you can go get coffee74or you can get somegood pastries and stuff.75There's also the HampStorewhich has non perishable foods,76it has milk, and juice, some eggs and stuff like that.77So there are lots of places oncampus that you can go to get food,78to hang out with people.79Then if you want to go off campus,80we have a really extensive bussystem that is free for students.81Another thing, again, ID card.82Some of the buses require you toshow your ID card to get the free ride,83but most of them you can just get onand you don't need to show them anything.84Take the bus into town.85There's Amherst, there's Northampton86and then there's Holyoke.87I haven't really been to Holyoke, but I goto Northampton and Amherst all the time88and there's a ton of foodplaces, tons of coffee shops.89You can get donuts.90We have an Insomnia Cookies.91Insomnia Cookies delivers to Hampshire.923AM cookies, nothing better.93There's also good pasta places.94There's great ramen places.95Boba, there is a good boba tea place.96Everyone loves the boba.97Actually, there are 4 differentboba tea places in Amherst98which is kind of excessive.99There's also whereAmherst College and UMass is,100and in Northampton we have Smith.101Holyoke is in Holyoke, because that makes sense.102Those are all the colleges ofthe five College Consortium too.103You have the bus system to get there.104There's just a quick littleintro into student life105coming on to campusas a first year student.106Why you shouldn't be worriedand why you should be excited.
