Hi, my name is Dr. Jackie Reilly. I'm Head of Department for Cybersecurity and Networks at Glasgow Caledonian University. The department is made up of 19 members of staff currently, and over 500 students over undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Like many people in Cybersecurity, I've evolved into the subject. I started life as a mathematician and then moved into computer networking where my main interest is around information security and governance. Throughout your program you'll have the opportunity to undertake a project. It's your honours project that makes you stand out from the rest of the people in your class. It's unique to you and is a great thing to talk about within interviews, when you go for jobs at the end of your program. One project is around about the use of bots in twitter and how that can influence society. Another student is looking at open wifi and the security implications for the users. Please be careful out there if you're using open wifi. The third student is looking at home IOT devices. There are many IOT devices in the shops these days and several very cheaply sourced. However, the security protocols embedded within these are not the best and therefore all the people that are using these IOT devices do they really understand the security implications for their home networks? At the center of this Department of Cybersecurity and Networks, we have a security operations lab. You'll see in the image here. The lab was opened in September 2019. It can hold up to 45 students and it's fully kitted to simulate working in a SOC, we're very pleased to say that it was sponsored by our industry partners and we hope that you can be joining us and enabling you to take full advantage of the facilities at GCU, including our SOC lab.
