Roxie Overaker | Reflections on the Halfway Point of my RLF project
The following is an computer-generated summary of the video transcript.
Hi everyone. I'm back and today marks the halfway point of my project. So I've already been in Nairobi for 2.5 months and the time has just flown by. It feels like I just landed yesterday. So we've basically broken this project down into two sections. So the first half of the project was working on fixing some of the things that weren't really working well or putting a bit more structure, so that when we go into the second phase, which is the scale up and growth. We have more of a solid foundation in place so that things will be working efficiently and working well as new orders come in and the business grows. So some of the issues that we identified early on it were things like the invoicing.and the ordering being very clunky. So we're looking into options to automate the ordering and invoicing process. We also found that David's companies really didn't have a lot of structure when it came to bookkeeping and record-keeping, which of course is a problem. So a lot of what I've been doing on a day to day is helping David get a bit more accustomed to accounting and finance standards. So thank you to Per Olson and the financial accounting course. I've been using a lot of that information every day. We've also been looking into additional automation in the website. So using things like jackpot, this is going to be especially important as we grow into new international market right now, it's very basic. But again, as the company grows, we're gonna be looking into some of the more sophisticated and cooler things that these chat bots and AI companies can do. We're also working on putting more processes in place to make the working environment more streamlined and efficient. And so this is something actually that OBE helped a lot with, organizational behavior with Konstantin. And finally, we are looking at making the supply chain more streamlined and reliable. So previously David would go to market in Eastley and CBD, the Central Business District and sort of randomly pick up the supplies he needed based on what he wanted and his contacts, things like zippers and buttons that need to be of a constant quality and we need a readily supply of and are important to have. So we've been looking into making sure that we have those contracts in place and those relationships. So with all of those sort of fundamentals in place now, we're ready to move on to the second phase of the project, which is the scale-up. So firstly I mentioned the chat bot. So I've been doing a venture comparison for those. We're into the final selection of the last two and we'll be moving forward with one on Monday. I've also created a marketing strategy that can be used over the years, even when the project is finished. The website that David has now is new as a few months ago. So they've actually never done any email marketing at all. So I've set up some email templates that can be used to go out and we're going to start rolling out with the email campaigns on Friday, so tomorrow. Additionally, we have been working with Al Jazeera, they're going to be doing a many series documentary on David. That's very exciting. And then finally we have a pop-up shop coming. So this is something David is going to be doing regularly every month or so as he moves forward. I'm hosting a little pop-up shop here in the warehouse on Saturday. So we've been lying first one to happen on May 1st and the purpose of this is surrounding Labor Day. So, highlighting the talent here in Kibera and the hard work that the workers here have done. So we thought Labor Day was the perfect day to really kick start this event. So stay tuned.
